For something totally different on Knysna’s waters a Knysna RIB Adventures (KRA) excursion is an absolute must! An eco-ocean safari with an adrenalin twist leaves one marveling at the wonder of the whole experience. Owned and operated by Brett Gething, KRA offers visitors to Knysna a unique maritime experience in a class all of its own.
Brett skippers his ‘Rigid Inflatable Boat’ (RIB) himself – a custom designed 29½ foot vessel with reinforced military grade pontoons and powered by eco-friendly twin 250hp 4-stroke outboards. ‘Moonraker’ can reach speeds of over 50 knots and is exceptionally stable and manoeuverable. Besides being acutely aware of the safety of his passengers, Brett operates in SANParks’ waters and has reduced his carbon footprint through the use of eco-friendly 4-stroke motors. Already an accomplished yachtsman, Brett is licensed by The South African Maritime Association to carry 12 passengers.
KRA trips conveniently depart from the Knysna Waterfront (outside Fishermans Cabin) and a host of options are on offer – from short ½ hour trips on the Knysna Estuary to a 2½ hour ocean extravaganza. Indeed, Brett will tailor any trip to suit your specific needs.
So take a deep breath and head off aboard ‘Moonraker’ for an unrivaled ocean experience! Exhilarating high speeds pose no problem for this vessel, both on the lagoon and out at sea. Experience an incredible rush as Brett opens the throttle and the wind screams through your hair! “I’ve experienced acceleration before – in multimillion rand supercars” is how one passenger describes his experience.
‘Moonraker’s’ powerful engines assist in making the passage through the notorious Knysna Heads that much easier and safer. Powerful swells and currents pose few problems for the vessel, although Brett will always ensure that the passage in no way threatens the safety of his passengers.
Once out to sea the true ocean safari begins. A trip of some 20 nautical miles includes not only the thrill of riding the waves at high speeds, but also a more sedate encounter with both the rugged beauty of the surrounding coastline and a magic of a glimpse into the life of various marine fauna. Get up close and personal with the coves and caves dotting the shoreline, and bask in the breathtaking beauty of Buffalo Bay & the incredible Noetzie castles.
If Lady Luck favours you on your voyage, possible wildlife sightings include whales, dolphins, seals, otters, gannets, gulls, penguins, terns, skuas, sunfish, turtles and sharks. Bryde’s whales are present throughout the year and sightings of dolphin pods in excess of 400 individuals have been recorded!
A RIB adventure is something visitors of our Knysna Accommodation should definitely not miss – don’t forget to pack a windbreaker, hat, sunscreen and, most importantly, your camera!
