Knysna and the surrounding areas are blessed with an abundance of culinary offerings, spanning a broad spectrum of tastes and prices. One is always intrigued as to what perhaps lies around the next corner on one’s gastronomic travels.
For those wistful of the vibrant, colourful, spicy eateries peppering the Mozambican coastline look no further than a little gem tucked away in Pledge Square on Main Road – Catembe Bar. Relaxed, friendly, welcoming and lively, Catembe offers its patrons a slice of Mozambique right here on the Garden Route!
Whilst sipping on a caipirinha, mojito or one of the many cocktails on offer, peruse the huge wall blackboard for the daily fare on offer. Anything from succulent Portuguese sardines, beef trinchada to spicy chicken livers for starters, to prego rolls and those Mozambican signature dishes – piri piri chicken and prawns. I ordered the Patagonian calamari for mains – tender and tasty……out of this world.
Oh yes – don’t forget to sample a catembe – Mozambican tipple of red wine and coke, served in a pint mug. Service at Catembe is attentive, friendly and efficient. Atmosphere is casual, vibey and fun. Personally I recommend Catembe highly and place it on my ‘to do’ list in Knysna.
