The Crags Festival - Garden Route

21 Jan 2015

The Crags, a quaint rural village, is situated on the beautiful Garden Route between the contrasting coastal resorts of Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley. Something is always happening in The Crags, but even more so these July school holidays with The Crags Winter Festival being held over two Sundays, 3 and 10 July. With 16 accommodation establishments and 22 activities crammed into a 30km radius, it comes as no surprise that ‘Cruising the Crags’ has become firmly entrenched on the Garden Route’s ‘must do’s’!

Within easy reach of the N2 are a host of things to see and do in The Crags, including:

  • Bramon Wine Estate – this family run estate, the furthest east of all Western Cape estates, pioneered the production of a superior Sauvignon Blanc ‘cap classique’ sparkling wine in South Africa. Spend an afternoon enjoying wine and delicious local fare whilst overlooking the Tsitsikamma mountains.
  • The Elephant Sanctuary – experience an intimate encounter with these magnificent pachyderms. Elephants are under severe pressure throughout Africa and The Elephant Sanctuary endeavours to play a responsible part in raising awareness of the plight and ecology of these wondrous animals.
  • Monkeyland – this is a global pioneer as a multi-species free-roaming primate sanctuary. In association with Touch a Monkey’s Heart Foundation, Monkeyland strives, as far as possible, to release previously caged primates.
  • Birds of Eden – housing a myriad of bird species from all corners of the globe, Birds of Eden is the largest single free-flight aviary in the world!
  • Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre – this rehabilitation centre accepts any injured, abandoned or displaced wild animal from the region. Tenikwa’s focus falls strongly on wild cat species, from Black Footed Cats to Leopards. Again, rehabilitation is always the goal where possible.
  • Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary – over 100 snakes on display, as well as crocodiles and monitor lizards.
  • Other attractions - include ceramics, fabrics, mohair creations, curios, theatre, farm stalls, arts and crafts.

The Crags Festival includes an array of stalls at the Mill Centre featuring arts and crafts, local produce and fun for kids with swings, face painting, sand art and animal feeding. Festival-goers can sample delectable homemade breads, a variety of cheeses, jams and preserves, virgin olive oils, pancakes, koeksisters, chocolate treats, local wine and much more.

Those establishments participating in the Festival are offering fabulous discounts:

  • 10% discount at Lawnwood Snake Park and the Puzzle Park as well as on the food bill at Peppermill Cafe.
  • 20% discount at The Elephant Sanctuary, Tenikwa. Monkeyland and Birds of Eden.
  • A free bottle of Vukani Sauvignon Blanc per every 4 guests dining at Bramon Wine Estate Restaurant.
